Learned a Lesson

By Sahil Gupta | Oct 20, 2008

There was a guy (kinda friend) who used to ask me hell lot of questions about websites, blogging and all. I helped him every time and anytime, of course free of cost and favours.

Few days ago he started a few blogs in the same niches I blog. In simple terms he is now a competitor. Am I stupid? or what? did I help him only to make him so knowledgeable that one day he’ll challenge me directly (or indirectly). And more frustrating thing is he’s out of touch, both online and offline.

Lesson learned: "Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he’ll steal your fish."

I am writing this post in too much of anger. I might delete it once I am cool.

    I know that sucks, But It happens all the time in the business we are in.That is the reason I don’t discuss the niches I am in with anyone.

    I would like to say, Competition is inevitable. It helps you to pull yourself up and concentrate better on your business. Also “Keep your friends close, Enemies closer”.

    Even we should learn from your experiences

    I dont see any point getting frustrated here…Nobody can take your knowledge…As a matter of fact John Chow, Darren Rowse, Amit, Myself all other bloggers share knowledge only….

    Many drive inspiration from top blogs..but nobody is able to replace them..they are where they..In a event of following them we may get big..but they aint going to be smaller..

    I also saw a list of blogs you prepared to surf through web in one of your posts..which means you also gather knowledge from others too. So chill mate..you are whiz kid of your jungle keep going on..

    The only thing of worry is if that friend of yours is copying your website content direclty..than you should bang him.. :)

    Hmmm it happens quite a lot of time, but then you should never post in anger, some things should be kept personal.

    I have problems too quite a lot of time, but I don’t post about it on my main blog, I use my personal blog to vent out my anger.

    This is another lesson you should learn :P.

    @Keith,

    This is my personal blog. And I did feel a bit relieved after posting the above post.

    @Manpreet,

    I am human, I have a basic right of getting frustrated with something a human is supposed to get frustrated.

    I do share knowledge with others, you can read some SEO articles here and there on this blog.

    I have no problem with competition because an added competitor is like a small drop in a cup of water. My problem is with the way he did it.

    You talk about biggies like John Chow, Darren Rowse… you know only what they want you to know about them. You never know how much they hide.

    All I learned from this case is that not all information is shareable. “Share in limits”.

    Thanks

    Ya that’s correct..Intelligence must prevail..But I think you should make a move on…because small hurdles may stop you from aiming big..

    Why Im saying so is that I have 5 to 10 such cases with myself where people istead of thanking have even back stabbed me to whom I gave my knowledge to…

    But that’s a part and parcel of game mate…It hurts I know it hurts badly..when kids of yesterday(in knowledge) try to appear thanklessly as uncle in front of you and that too as your competitors..

    But this is was the way life goes..I felt hurt but made a move on without much anger and converted that shell or down slide to my use by exploring more knowledge & time today is going good for me..

    @Manpreet

    Thanks for the above thoughtful comment

    I have moved on too, it’s just that I have left this post standing :)
